Hey everyone, there’s this really awesome summer camp called Camp Aranu’tiq for trans kids, and I’ve never really seen it mentioned on here, which is surprising to me since it’s a great program. It was founded by a trans guy, Nick Teich, after his old summer camp refused to let him continue working there after transitioning, highlighting a big problem for trans kids: most summer camps refuse to accommodate them, leaving them without the opportunity to experience summer camp like all the other kids. Camp Aranu’tiq is exclusively for trans and gender non-conforming kids, and their goal is to provide the most normal, fun summer camp experience possible. That means there’s not really any programming talking about gender, because that’s something that these kids have to think about almost everywhere else they go. But, talking about gender with other campers or counselors obviously isn’t discouraged! The point is to provide a place where kids don’t have to hide anything and can talk openly about their gender and related stuff if they want to, and to provide a supportive community of other kids and adults they can relate to and rely on.

They currently have two camp sessions a year: one in New England, and one in southern California. Both of these are for kids ages 8-15, and they provide cabins for male/masculine-identified kids, female/feminine-identified kids, and kids who identify as or are simply more comfortable in a gender neutral cabin. Because the camps have gotten so popular so quickly, they recently founded three other smaller camps: one 5-day leadership camp for trans and gender-variant kids ages 16-18, one weekend camp for trans kids of all ages and their families, and one weekend camp for kids with LGBTQ parents and their families.

Unsurprisingly, this is a non-profit organization. This means that all of the counselors are volunteers, and although the camps do cost money, they have never turned away a family due to inability to pay. Other than this, the camp runs entirely on donations, and they need as much help as they can get, as they have just taken a huge step and purchased their own camp location so they won’t have to rent from other camps! The thing is, it needs lots of renovations. If you have any amount to spare, this is honestly a fantastic way to help support trans kids. This is something the campers look forward to all year, and it’d be awesome to help them keep expanding to provide more kids with this opportunity. Even if you can’t, at least spread the word about them! I know there are definitely people on tumblr who are right in the age range to attend.

(also I’m going to be a counselor at the California camp in a few weeks and it’s gonna be awesome)

I have asked this myself in the past and never gotten an answer.

Maybe today will be the day we are both finally enlightened.

Maybe someone made a typo and it just got out of hand?

I kinda feel like panic!at the disco started the whole exclamation point thing and then it caught on around the internet, but maybe they got it from somewhere else, IDK.

The world may never know…

Maybe it’s something mathematical?

I’ve been in fandom since *about* when Panic! formed and the adjective!character thing was already going strong, pretty sure it predates them.

It’s a way of referring to particular variations of (usually) a character — dark! Will, junkie!Sherlock, et cetera. I have suspected for a while that it originated from some archive system that didn’t accommodate spaces in its tags, so to make common interpretations/versions of the characters searchable, people started jamming the words together with an infix.

(Lately I’ve seen people use the ! notation when the suffix isn’t the full name, but is actually the second part of a common fandom portmanteau. This bothers me a lot but it happens, so it’s worth being aware of.)

"Bang paths" (! is called a "bang"when not used for emphasis) were the first addressing scheme for email, before modern automatic routing was set up. If you wanted to write a mail to the Steve here in Engineering, you just wrote "Steve" in the to: field and the computer sent it to the local account named Steve. But if it was Steve over in the physics department you wrote it to phys!Steve; the computer sent it to the "phys" computer, which sent it in turn to the Steve account. To get Steve in the Art department over at NYU, you wrote NYU!art!Steve- your computer sends it to the NYU gateway computer sends it to the "art" computer sends it to the Steve account. Etc. ("Bang"s were just chosen because they were on the keyboard, not too visually noisy, and not used for a huge lot already).

It became pretty standard jargon, as I understand, to disambiguate when writing to other humans. First phys!Steve vs the Steve right next to you, just like you were taking to the machine, then getting looser (as jargon does) to reference, say, bearded!Steve vs bald!Steve.

So I’m guessing alternate character version tags probably came from that.

this has been your daily lesson in Internet History.

The More You Know.

FINALLY. It’s been like a decade, but someone finally tells me what that friggin’ exclamation point means. Thank you, kind stranger.

Guys, please be sure to visit your doctors ASAP if you participated during the BDSM 101 panel. A few people have been reporting itchiness and sore bumps on their genitalia and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

i would say there’s no way my 60 year old aunt would make a facebook status about masturbation but she unabashedly left her dildo here last time she stayed with us so
